Chapter 16
Liesl knew as she began the long journey from Berlin to Calais, and then to Dover on the ferry, that sheâd not really thought this through. The return journey seemed so much longer without Millie to talk to. She replayed their argument over and over. Kurt was a little aloof â well, he wasnât in reality when you knew him, but she conceded it could seem that he was, as he was just shy and so broken by all that had happened to him.
She was in no doubt that those people Felix said recognised Kurt were mistaken. He had been in the Hitler Youth â he had no secrets from her â but so was everyone, and he was only seventeen when the war ended so hardly a high-ranking Nazi. It was preposterous.
Perhaps Kurt was right that there was no future in Germany. Her mother and Willi felt the same, Daniel had no wish to return to Austria, and now Kurt wanted to leave too. There were other places she could go for work; linguists would always be needed. She had just always imagined Germany because it was the place she knew. She smiled at the memories she and Kurt had evoked this week, the places they visited, the experiences. Those were real. Berlin was where she felt at home, but Kurt was going to be her home now, so wherever he was, that was where sheâd belong.
The logistics of the move would have to be ironed out after her exams. She knew it would be hard to focus now with such an exciting future looming, but she was determined to get her first and nothing could distract her, not even Kurt. He loved her so much, and he understood how vital her studies were to her. Unlike the feckless Jamie, who was so fickle, hopping from one thing to another, Kurt was more grown up, more serious and a much better match for her.
Sheâd never mentioned Jamie and Kurt had never asked. She was Kurtâs first proper girlfriend, and heâd just assumed she was new to romance as well. He was so romantic and treated her with such reverence and respect, she could never imagine telling him that sheâd slept with someone else. Hopefully she would never have to. It wasnât a lie as such; he just would be appalled and she couldnât bear to see the hurt on his face. He kissed her sweetly, not passionately as Jamie had done, and held her hand. He attended to her every need but never gave in to his passion. He explained how he wanted their lovemaking to be special, and within the bonds of marriage, a sacred, precious thing. It made her feel so loved.
She wondered as the train trundled along if she should tell them in Ballycreggan she was engaged, then immediately dismissed the idea. Mutti and Erich would be delighted to see Kurt, she was sure, but Daniel and Elizabeth would worry about the effect a new romance would have on her exams.
